A WW2 Allied Cease Fire Order, issued on the orders of Field Marshal Montgomery at 20:50 on May 4th, the original field order in purple mimeographed ink was received by Cpl. B. Bradfield (ATS), whose name is written in pen on the top right corner, framed and glazed.
At 18:20 on 4th May 1945 German field commanders surrendered all hostile forces in North West Europe to Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Army Group at his Tactical HQ, on Luneburg Heath. Immediately afterwards he ordered his Chief of Operations, Major General David Belchem, to issue a cease fire order to all subordinate units, this document being a surviving copy of this order. This signal was transmitted at 20.50 hours on the 4th May 1945.
Cpl Bettie Bradfield was part of the Auxilliary Territorial Service (ATS) during WW2, having first served with the 21st Army Group in Bristol and then being deployed first to Belgium and then to Germany as the end of the war approached.
